To operate a boom lift (also known as an Elevated Work Platform or EWP) you will require training depending on the height of the boom lift.

ree

High Risk Work License (WP class) – Mandatory for over 11m Boom Lifts

If the boom lift has a boom length over 11 meters, the operator must hold a WP class High Risk Work License, issued by the relevant state or territory Work Health and Safety (WHS) regulator. This is issued after the person has completed TLILIC0005 - Licence to operate a boom-type elevating work platform (boom length 11 metres or more) and applied for a high risk licence.

Yellow Card – For Boom Lifts Under 11m

For boom-type EWPs under 11 meters, the RIIHAN301E - Operate elevating work platform unit of competency or EWPA Yellow Card is required. Operators must be trained in how to safely operate a boom lift and deemed competent. Once training is completed you will be issued a EWP Statement of Attainment or EWPA Yellow Card.

Working at Heights Training - Required for working at any heights over 2m

A Working at Heights course is essential if you're doing any kind of work over 2m - such as using a boom lift. It equips you with the skills to identify and manage fall hazards, use fall protection equipment correctly, and respond to emergencies. This training not only protects your safety — it also helps ensure compliance with Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws and is a standard requirement on most worksites.

White Card - Mandatory for all works sites

If you're doing any kind of work on a work site, including if you are using a boom lift you will need a White Card that ensures that you understand basic Work Health and Safety (WHS) risks, rights, and responsibilities on a construction site.
